Songkran. Thailand’s annual water festival. Traditionally, the festival marked the start of the Thai New Year and was a time to pay respect to elders, including family, friends and community monks. The festival is celebrated throughout the entire country from April 13 – 15, though the largest of the celebrations last six days or longer. During Songkran, there are no rules. It’s an all out water fight from sun up until sundown.
This picture is from my first day of Songkran in the northern city of Chiang Mai. The family that owned the corner store on our block (I lived in Thailand for a period of time) was out in full force. My friends and I teamed up with the kids and attacked neighbors and passersby alike. Everyone from children to grandparents were in the streets, and all were soaking wet. It was amazing. It was day that reminded me why Thailand is better known as the Land of Smiles.
